Thanks everyone

I'll look at the cd's see if there is a list.

I guess the place itself is not important - this information is for an assignment I have to do but I still feel as though I should know these abbreviations for the future in doing my own family research.

Gould Genealogy has a cd of Bailliere's Victoria Gazetteer and Road Guide 1879 which apparently has these abbreviations. So I order it and maybe I can then offer assistance to others with similar queries.

Hi Shirley

There is this list of abbreviations

http://talltrees.sirrah-comp.com/resources/vic_abbr.htm

The birth places on Ancestry do not follow any format, you do get abbreviations such as KORR but you also get full place names, often misspelt. Instead of buying the CD, which may not be of any help, buy the birth certificate as that will confirm the birth place.

Another possibility is Kororoit Creek which runs east of Melton and runs close to if not through the  Keilor Plains area.

On birth registration place abbreviated Korr - does anyone know which places this refers. Probably in the Bacchus Marsh/Melton areas.

Thanks
Shirley

Thanks

Just seems wrong - child was born 1868 Melton died 31 weeks. I suppose the family could have been on the move.

Shirley

Shirley the Victorian death index in 1868 does not give the place of death on the index only the place of birth and if the informant has given accurate information, would be the same place as deatiled on the birth index or in the same District.   As I mentioned previously, the births are registered in a District which is not always the same name as the rural locality or residential address where it actually occurred.

Birth
QUAILE Charlotte
Father Vere  /Mother Charlotte JACKSON
At Melton  1868  Reg#11012

Death
QUAILE Charlotte
Father Vere  Mother Charlotte
1868  Age 31 Weeks  Born KORR   Reg#9392

I would agree with Andy...Koroit Creek which would be in the District of Melton.

A search of Q*  Charlotte  Melton 1868.  Has to be her.

Inquest Index.
QUERILL Charlotte
At Melton  1868  Reg#331
Cause Abscess

I found this link sometime ago and the advice extemely helpful and worth reading right through.

And as the author advises....DON'T simply post a message on a Mailing List asking what place name is shown as "abcd" - the answer is generally a guess and not based on facts!

There are a number of sites that have lists of the Victorian town abbreviations used in the BDM's.

Thanks Cando and Andy

I've order the cd anyway - can't hurt to have extra avenues of research.

I'll check out the site.

As my research is for an assignment I am not expected to purchase certificates - it's just that I can't help myself. When something intrigues me, like unknown places, I just have to find out.

HI Shirley

Information about quote from one of your posts

"the family I am looking at were supposedly living at "Mountain View" which I suspect was just the name they gave to their property and only those who lived in the vicinity at that time would know of the place, though it is possible someone knows of the place these days, probably only someone in a historical society. "

From the book by Les Blake "Place Names of Victoria" describes Mountain View as a farming district south of Drouin: descriptive noun.

So probably not their property name, but just the area in which they had their farm.

Thanks Noells

I saw that as well. It's not that important, but just goes to show how difficult it is to actually locate some of the very early settlements.
