Hi, Andy, Most of the PR in Whitby  library finish 1812, apart from Lythe, 1837, There are two ref. to a John Hayes both well out of your time zone. 
Marr. John hayes ,blacksmith to Elizabeth Oliver 20 May 1792
bapt Thomas son of John and Elizabeth Hayes 7 March 1794.
looks like a certificate is the only way.
