Alexander Bowie b c1816 d 1894
« on: Friday 19 October 12 19:31 BST (UK) »
Trying to find info on Alexander Bowie  born about 1816 in Forres (illegitimate). Died 17 Feb 1894 in Buckie.  Married 26 Jan 1839 (RC) to Margaret Green. b 9.7.1815 Rathven.  They had 8 children - Jane 1840, Ann 1843, John 1846, Alexander 1847,Mary 1850, Margaret 1853, James 7/1/1856 and Henry 1859.
I found him on 1841,51, 61, 71, 81, 91 census.  His age according to the 91 census was 75yrs.  On his death certificate, signed by grandson John Campbell (son of Ann), his age was recorded as being 67.  It also named his father as Alexander Bowie, Tailor, (reputed) and mother Janet Hossack.  I have not found any record of Alexander Bowie, Tailor in Forres but there is a George Taylor, Tailor, Forres.   Libindx has his father as George.
(Did the grandson get it wrong?)  I have not managed to find a birth certificate for him.  I would like to find out more about Janet Hossack as I have no info on her at all.
Alexander Bowie (Buie) is the father of my Gt Grandmother Jane Bowie, married to James Scott in 19/1/1862
I am totally stuck on this one.  Any help would be appreciated.

Nelpir, if you can't find a baptism at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk, your next port of call is probably the kirk session minutes. These are held in the National Archives Records of Scotland www.nas.gov.uk - but so far they are only available, as digital images, in Edinburgh and in a few other archives, in Scotland.

Search the NAS online catalogue for Forres kirk session, catalogue reference starting CH2.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Don't know if it's related but you mentioned Alexander's marriage being Roman Catholic and his father being given as another Alexander Bowie. There is a RC death of an Alexander Bowie, 1842 Tynant, St. Ninians which looks like it's in the parish of Bellie not too far from Forres or Rathven.

1842 Tynant, St. Ninians which looks like it's in the parish of Bellie not too far from Forres or Rathven.

It's Tynet - See http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/3588 - and it's part way from Fochabers to Buckie. Sometimes it's in the parish of Bellie and sometimes it's in the parish of Enzie. It would be maybe 25 miles from Forres, but is quite near Buckie.

The chapel of St Ninian's is a mile or two away from the graveyard http://www.geograph.org.uk/gridref/NJ3960

Alexander Bowie who died on 14 September 1842 was aged 31 and is buried in Bellie kirkyard. He was the son of Alexander Bowie, baker in Fochabers, and Mary Stronach, and grandson of George Bowie, baker in Fochabers. He was baptised on 2 April 1811 in Bellie according to the Roman Catholic records. 12 other members of his family are also mentioned on the gravestone, going back before the establishment of the separate St Ninian's RC graveyard at Chapelford. See http://libindx.moray.gov.uk/mainmenu.asp - I see that Nelpir is already aware of this site.
