Victorian Women's Eyebrow Fashions?
« on: Sunday 29 May 05 15:27 BST (UK) »
Hello all!
Bit of a strange topic here: I have just been sent a fantastic photograph of my GGG Grandmother by a second-cousin-twice-removed. The lady's name is Martha Fereday (nee Wassell). Notice in the attached photo (of Martha's face), her eyebrows seem to be very decorative, for want of a better word. Prior to seeing this image I thought only men arranged their eyebrows in such a fashion?

Can anybody tell me: was this the 'done thing' back then (about 1880)? Has anybody else seen women with similar eyebrows as Martha's?

Thanks for reading!

Ryan.

If this is a studio picture I would suggest that it is the photo that has been retouched, not the eyebrows.

This could also apply to an amatuer picture, unless it is just a simple snapshot.

Regards
Robert

Oh I see. I never thought that they had the capability, nor necessity to do that back then. It is in fact, a studio picture. There is another photo of Martha with her daughter Martha in a typical studio setting.

Thanks for your reply Robert!
