Joseph Stacey
« on: Saturday 20 October 12 12:25 BST (UK) »
Hi All
I have a Joseph Stacey stonemason who was present in the Bristol Workhouse in the 1871 census. I have been unable to locate a death record for this gentleman and he is not present in the 1881 census. I think this Joseph may be my ggg grandfather. I have traced him from 1841 through to 1861 where he was a stonemason and then this Joseph in the workhouse. I have three of his children in Sydney Australia. I have also been unable to find his wife Mary and his youngest daughter Sarah. No success with shipping records yet. But they had to have gone somewhere.
Regards
Wren

Did you check freebmd for a marriage for Sarah between 1861-1870 - there is one showing in 1870 but the IGI shows her father as Henry so you can ignore it

There is a Mary Stacey death in 1863 - have you already discounted it as Joseph shows as married on the 1871 entry?

www.freebmd.org.uk

1861 shows Joseph b Stowey Somerset 1808 but living in Bristol St James
Wife Mary Ann b 1808 Parton Somerset

Sarah A (?? Ann) b 1848 Bristol

1871 Joseph in WH was b Bristol St James 1804 but this may be an error

Thanks Sue Trish and Carole
Perhaps that death is my Joseph. Certainly those baptisms fit, although I wonder whether the Jane should be John. I have Emma, Harriet and John in Sydney where they all ended up being fairly successful. I can't find Sarah. I checked out Mary Ann and Sarah for Australia arrival but nothing as yet. I'm thinking that migration to the States may be another option.
The Barton Regis death may be a possibility.

Hi Wren,

No Jane is not John as she is age 10 on the 1841 Census and John is age 2 c 1838.

Trish :)

EDIT I think I have her;

Marriage Dec 1850, Bristol, 11 262
Jane STACEY and Francis INMAN on same page

1861 Census
Redland, Westbury on Trym,
Bristol, Gloucestershire
RG9/1739/120/19
Francis INMAN, 36, Head, Mar, Bootmaker, born Bristol
JANE, 30, Wife, Mar, born Stowey, Somerset
Sophia 8, George H 7, Frank H 6, Ellen 2, Garibaldi 11mths

By 1871 they have extra Children and Jane is easy to find on Census til 1891.
