Hi wrjones

Sorry, I do not understand that last remark:

Finally I should like to add a note of caution.  It is all very well if the Family Group you are searching for, live in their own particular household.but they seem to ignore those who are in Lodgings etc.

The census is name indexed, so it does not matter whether you are living on your own, with a family, lodging, or in an hotel - the name index should find you under any circumstances except bad transcription.

Hi wrjones

And here is the reason why

Durham, Henry 41 Burslem, Staffordshire Brother  Stoke upon Trent  Staffordshire

As you can see, it has been wrongly transcribed as DURHAM.

If you look at the scan below and compare it to the name index's, even Joseph & Edna the children of Henry have been transcribed as surname THOMAS, not Durber or even Durham

As I have said on many occasions, the census is transcribed by people whose first language is not English - so you have to try soundex and spelling variations to names if you can not locate someone under their proper name.
