Address 1920's
« on: Sunday 21 October 12 16:39 BST (UK) »
I am looking for the history of a couple of addresses in Bath.

I can find one that still exists which is 9 Charlotte Street and seems to be a boarding house - was it then I don't know.  (I have it on a birth certificate district of Bath Walcot)

The other I cannot find is 15 Kingston Road where parents of said baby were living.
Any knowledge of these addresses or the area they used to be would be welcome thank you.

Hardly any of the pre-War street survives. Probably only the chapel at the north end. The southern half was shifted sideways to make room for a multi-storey car park.

Thanks very much for the map links.

Any idea what sort of areas these would be in the 1920's ie affluent/down at heel, any particular trade?

Is Charlotte Street a boarding house area in general.  I just wonder why the baby was born at a different address to the parents.  Unless they just put the same address and really she was living at Charlotte on her own.  She wasn't from the area so in service maybe?

Do you mean that on the Birth Certificate, in column 1 "When and Where Born" it says 9 Charlotte Street, and in column 7 "Signature, description, and residence of informant" it says 15 Kingston Road? Who is the informant?

In Kelly's Directory of Somerset, 1919, 9 Charlotte Street is the residence of Mrs. Caroline Hughes, Maternity Nurse.

Ah maternity nurse well there you go that's a good bit of info thanks.

Yes that's exactly what I mean Stan.  Baby born Charlotte Street address for both parents given as Kingston Road.  Mother was the informant.

It reads as if they were an ordinary married couple but I think this was for appearances as she married 3 years later as a spinster under her birth name.

I find it unusual not only that fathers name on the birth cert but that the baby took his name not hers.

Is it possible to check who was living at those two addresses in 1920 please?
