Charles Morrissey from Co Clare to the Civil War
« on: Monday 22 October 12 06:19 BST (UK) »
Our Ancestor Charles Morrissey, b abt 1830 Ballymakea, Co Clare in Ireland , emigrated to America but sadly died in the Civil War while fighting for the Union. His family of 2 brothers and their children came instead to Australia and heard eventually that he had been killed , apparently at Gettysburg. He is said to have left a wife and children in Baltimore, whether he married in Ireland and took them with him or married in Baltimore we don't know.
His parents are Timothy Morrissey b.1793  d. 1868 and mother Catherine Killeen b 1792 and d. 1871, They were also natives of Co Clare and farmed there. Charles had two brothers that we know of , Thomas b 1828 d. 1916 and Patrick b 1834 d. 1905 in Grafton district, New South Wales,Australia.
We would love to hear from anyone researching this family, we particularly want to track down Charles' wife and children, we don't know what became of them. We know only that they lived in Baltimore. Any information appreciated, including service in the Civil War. Anne

I found no Charles Morrissey family in Maryland on the 1860 Census!

I don't see any Charles Morrisseys from Maryland who fought in the Civil War.  There were a few from Pennsylvania, which is close to Maryland, but I didn't see any that were listed as dying at Gettysburg.

There are records of Civil War soldiers here - http://www.nps.gov/civilwar/soldiers-and-sailors-database.htm

Sadly the only thing we have to go on, is that a letter was sent to Charles Morrisseys' brother Thomas in Australia, telling them that he had died at Gettysburg, we have tried to look outside the square and include the entire Civil war period. Thomas sent 100 pounds to the widow and children, he was told they lived in Baltimore. We would love to answer this riddle of Charles, I found 3 Charles Morrisseys from the Civil War fighting for the north and from Ireland. We don't have access to US Census records or war records via Ancestry so looking elsewhere for help. We felt incredibly sad that this widow and her children were left alone in a strange country after his death. I will look up the suggested website. Thanks for that

Many US census records or transcriptions are available for free at www.familysearch.org.
