Wow!

Many thanks to all who've helped here. I have much to look into, but very limited time at present. Your replies have certainly given me a few avenues for investigation.

It may be a few days before I can delve further but I'll report back shortly!

I am fairly certain I have found the family in 1851 at Waterman's Fields, Woolwich.  :)

HO107, Piece 1589, Folio 415, Page 55

Alex'r Hinchel....  42  Scotland
Sarah Hinchel....  37  Chatham, Kent
Alex'r Hinchel....  9  Gibraltar
Margaret Hinchel....  6  Gibraltar
Sam'l Hinchel....  1  Woolwich, Kent  (on the next page)

The surname could be Hinchelwood but the end is somewhat faded.  ???

Hope this helps.

Tony  :)

Many thanks for that Tony. It certainly does look like them!

I think I need to get on and trace the births in Gibraltar :)

would this be his parents marriage

john alexander hinshelwood occupation fisherman on the 2 may 1843 to sarah harrison at
lime house st annes tower hamlets, his father  same name, deceased
her father christopher harrison ropemaker   .from the parish reg

Doran, I think that there are two Hinchelwood/Hinshelwood families at the time, one north and one south of the Thames.

My tree is on Anc****y but is compromised. I foolishly copied in info from a cousin's tree when I first started on this project but now have good reason to doubt some of the data. I'm going back over everything on that branch of my family and will be taking out anything that I can't document. Painstaking but necessary!

On a certain website (a******y) this record has been transcribed as "Saml Hinckeham". Your talents are wasted, you should be in the Police Force!

Peter,

This is quite an old query now and wonder if you did find all the data you were after, plus more hopefully. We appear to share Hinchelwoods in our family lines so would be interested in sharing findings.
Wilson (Crieff/Auchterarder) Waddell (Coupar Angus)
Hinchelwood (Kilmarnock) Passfield (Wethersfield) Keeble (Suffolk)
Cross (N Yorkshire) Allan (Yorkshire) Butler (Ireland) Narey/Neary (Ireland)
