Hi Fred and Keyboard,

A 'Skep' was a large wickerwork basket used in the wollen mills for transporting reels, bobbins etc from one area in the mill to another.

Hi there,

was wondering if anyone still following this thread could help me out please. I'm trying to find the parents of John Carr who is the father of George Henry Carr mentioned in this thread.

From Census records this is what I've got on John...

- 1841: John Carr head, aged 30, Basket Maker living in New Bridge Lane, Stockport, Cheshire with wife Hannah aged 30, William aged 9, George (the person you're talking about above) aged 5 and James aged 2
- 1851: John Carr head, aged 39, Basket Maker from Yorkshire, Appleton living in Halifax, Yorkshire with wife Hannah Carr aged 44, William Edward Carr aged 19, George Henry Carr aged 14 and James Oratia Carr aged 11
- 1856: John Carr's wife Hannah Chandley dies
- 1861: John Carr a boarder, aged 50, Basket & Skip Maker from York, Malton living in Bolton, Lancashire with John Carr a boarder aged 18 (not sure who he is), Mary Carr a visitor aged 52
- 1871: John Carr head, aged 60, Basket Maker from Yorks Malton living in Clayton, Bradford, Yorkshire, with wife Mary Ann Carr aged 60
- 1881: John Carr head, aged 8, Basket Maker from Yorkshire, Marton living in Hyde, Stockport, Cheshire with wife Mary Ann Carr aged 68
- 1891: John Carr head, aged 78 Basket Maker from Yorkshire, Malton living in Altrincham, Cheshire with wife Mary Ann Carr aged 80
- A John Carr died in Altrincham Cheshire during Oct-Dec 1893 - believed to be my John.

Haven't yet found the marriage to presumed second wife, Mary Ann.

When looking for his birth or baptism within a 10 mile radius of the above slightly varying places of birth (but likely to be from the same person just using a different birth place reference), I can find six possible baptisms of John Carr during his birth year probably being during 1810-1813:

1. 28 Feb 1810 at New Malton Yorkshire, father John Carr (Cordwainer), mother Jane
2. 20 April 1810 at New Malton Yorkshire, mother Ann Carr (spinster) (most likely illegitimate)
3. 23-24 Jan 1811 at Norton by Malton, Yorkshire, father Joseph Carr, mother Mary
4. 28 July 1811 at North Grimston, Yorkshire, illegitimate and born to Ann Carr
5. 23 August 1812 at Appleton-le-Street, York, England, father William (although couldn't find a Bishop's transcript for more info)
6. 12 Oct 1813 at Wintringham, Yorkshire, illegitimate and born to Elizabeth Carr.

Don't know where to go from here. I was hoping someone else may have had some luck or know how I can find it from here!

Cheers,
Stu
