I did find a marriage of a George Giddings to an Alice Veal at Shenley, Herts 24 Sept 1781.

Allen marriage index shows that this George was of the parish of Barnet

I wouldn't rule anything out! This lot is such a mystery I've no idea where they were all from!

Beds/Hunts - no marriage (--?--) Giddings/Alice
Biggleswade - no baptism William Hayes
Beds - no obvious burials of William and Alice Hayes (yet their daughter married in Biggleswade, and seems to have stayed there until she died)

Where did you find the Bedford burial - I can't see it on the NBI?

I found it on the familysearch.

The NBI shows William Haines age 13 buried on that date at Bedford St Mary. I'll go with the NBI.

Do you think that I should widen my search by asking the question re Giddins/Alice on the boards of the adjoining counties? Perhaps there is something on the local PR's?

I've checked Hunts Marriage Index - nothing. Allen marriage Index for Herts - just the one in Shenley. It would do no harm in asking for look ups in the marriage indexes for Cambs and Northants.

It's bugging me that I can't find a burial for either William or Alice Hayes
