Cordwainer Apprenticeship - Completed
« on: Monday 29 October 12 06:34 GMT (UK) »
When my Gt, Gt, Gt Grandfather was married in 1847 the certificate records that he was a Cordwainer by trade. The 1851 Census for Calow also records the fact that he had an apprentice in the house who was from Frome in Somerset. I can't find my relative in the 1841 Cenus return in the local area when he would have been 20 years of age.
I'm guessing that it is possible that he could have been a long way from home on his apprenticeship?.  How would they have found somewhere to learn their trade? Was there a local or a national scheme for these apprenticeships?

There are 2 John Cowlishaws in the Derbyshire area.

1. Ref HO107 Piece 194 Book/Folio 5/8 Page 10
This John was living with Henry aged 70, Job aged 25 and were living at Middle Town Calow John was a Blacksmith at this time

2 Ref HO107 Piece 188 Book/Folio 7/27 Page 12
This John was living with father John aged 60, mother Hannah 50 and 3 children and were living at Shardlow Johns occupation is almost illegible.

Hope this helps

1841 Census HO107  193  13/8  10

John Cowlishaw, 15, Shoem Ap, b. Derbyshire
Address - High Street, Bolsover

The '41 Census is rounded down, which would account for the c.1826 birth?

Thank you both for the suggestions. I'd already ruled out the John Cowlishaw in Calow as I have found him again in floowing census years. The parents of the Shardlow John rule him out as my John's parents are Edward & Hannah.
The Bolsover John is a possibility, it is just his age that doesn't match very well. However, I have looked at all John Cowlishaws in the 1851 Census born between 1818 and 1830 and none of them are Shoe Makers except for mine. Assuming the John Cowlishaw in Bolsover completed his apprenticeship I guess it could well be one and the same.
Perhaps someone else told the enumerator the age of the two apprentices and guessed?

Yes, they are John's parents. I've got him pegged down pretty much except for where he was in 1841. In 1851 he is recorded as a Cordwainer in Brimington Common (name in the return is miss spelt Johnc Cowlishaw. He is also recorded in the 1857 Whites Directory as a Cordwainer. Thanks for your helpful tips.
