Well...good find from PB :)

St Patrick's is about 3 or 4 miles from the St-Louis area of the city. However, it's the only English-speaking catholic church in the archdiocese and may have been the only one a century ago.

In the 1871 there's a Mary MacDonald, age 46 (1825) and widowed, living in Quebec City with James Martin, 19, Bridget Martin, 12, and Charlotte Martin, 10. Mary is from Scotland and Presbyterian, but the children are Catholic.

Baptism of James Martin at Notre-Dame in Quebec City in 1852. Son of John Martin of the 66th Regiment, and Mary MacDonald. Godfather is John Henry and godmother Jane Starling.

Cheers,

Wow!
I am impressed. Mary Martin nee MacDonald would almost certainly have been a Presbyterian although I have no idea about her husband or children.
Thank you all for your help.

Interesting......Mary macDonald is a widow at the time of the 1871 census.

Just found John Martin's death.....on August 20th, 1872. At the Beauport Lunatic Asylum, aged 58.

Husband of Mary MacDonald. James Martin and John Ferguson present at the funeral. An inquest was held.

Oh, and John Ferguson is the very next name on the 1871 census sheet, right above Mary Macdonald and her children. A neighbour evidently.

Can't find baptisms for Lizzie or Ann, or a death for Mary. Or a remarriage.

But I did find a ward map for Quebec City. Mary and three of her children are in Montcalm Ward in the 1871 census, that's numbered 145. Ward 145 is exactly where Saint Louis or Lewis suburb is located now. So....to answer your original question, it's in Quebec City :)

In 1881 Mary, Lizzie and Charlotte are still in the same ward in Quebec City...Lizzie is a year older than Charlotte.

John Ferguson is still the neighbour, so they're in the same house as 1871.

Aha, just found Mary and Charlotte in 1901...Mary's birth date is given as 22 June 1821 and the year of her arrival in Canada is 1850.

Still in Montcalm ward but it seems her friend John Ferguson has moved away.

And Mary died on Oct 14, 1904. Buried at Saint Patrick. Her name is transcribed as McDonnell, and age given as 65....she may have shaded it just a bit :)

One of those present at the funeral was William Ferguson, but I didn't see any William in John Ferguson's family.
