The fella looks like he is in OZ  by the way he is casually dressed

He is wearing a three piece suit!  :o (A bit crumpled but nevertheless a suit.  ;))

The only casual thing about him is that he is not wearing a collar and tie. And it is obviously just a candid photo so that may be the reason.

Just my thoughts.  :)

My father wore a three piece suit as a young man in the 1930s on occasions, and he didn't leave Australia until he was over 60, in the 1970s

But would you class this as casual dress? I'm not sure if it would have been casual even in the 20's/30s - and I know folks used to dress up more in the 'olden days'.

I'm not suggesting that the photo was not taken in Australia as he is wearing a suit, but just questioning the use of the term 'casual dress' - where in the world it was taken is irrelevant.  :)

yeah - I understood that  ;)    - sorry wasn't querying you use of casual      ;)

- just that Aussies did wear 3 piece suits even for non-formal/normal work wear - then took their collars and ties off when they got home.

Personally I don't think there is any way of telling where it was taken from what is showing in the photo.     ;D

Oh ok, sorry Wiggy, I misunderstood.  :)

I agree, impossible to tell location without more information. For example if the OP says that William emigrated in 1920, this is obviously not going to have been taken in Scotland in 1925.  ;) Maybe once they return to this post we may get a bit more info.

Hi everyone thanks for the interest & in view of various comments here is some more info
Yes He is William Wood B july 1903 Montrose ex RAF arrived Fremantle SS Berrima in 1927 Aug 15th contact at D McLennan Trayning [ town in WA ] Arrived back in London on the ORONSAY on AUG 29 1930.  Photo in question has the date recorded on rear as JULY 27 1930 so if date correct must be in Australia.   He was single when he left RAF yet was a widower when he married in 1935 in Arbroath, thus the second query about Perth marriages.  Maybe the girl was a previous daughter of the first wife. There is no knowledge of this marriage ? in any family knowledge. This mystery will probably will never be solved  RON
This new photo was also supposed to be in Perth WA William is rear second left Who are the others is unknown

William - b 1903

arrived Australia Aug 15 1927

photo dated July 27 1930

arrived London Aug 29 1930

I would be very interested to know how long the trip was from Australia to London in the 1930s? I know it used to be a lot longer than one month (3 or 4) sailing the other way.  ;) Did William depart from Fremantle and if so do you know what date? Do you know the route taken?

Maybe this was a farewell photograph. I am still not sure that this photo screams Australia, but if the dates tally then I suppose it must have been taken there.

The actual date of Dept is not on Shipping recs.  Net search shows travel time 1930s to be about 35 to 40 days from Fremantle.  RON
