COMPLETED. Help with 1881 census entry
« on: Friday 02 November 12 09:51 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I am struggling to read the detail on this 1881 census entry from Scarborough.

I'm trying to establish the occupation for the first entry, James Harford - I think the second word is Southcliff which relates to an area of Scarborough...  I also cannot read the place name after Lincolnshire under where born?

Jumping down the list to the eighth entry, Alice Ann Howlett, she is listed as a lodger but I am trying to establish what is written in the condition as to marriage field?  Any ideas appreciated.

Many thanks
MATSON - Hull, Yorkshire as starting point
HOWLETT - Hull, Yorkshire as starting point
HILTON - Hull, Yorkshire as starting point
KIRMAN - Hull, Yorkshire as a starting point
PURDON - Hull, Yorkshire as a starting point

Alice Ann Howlett seems to be "unmd" (unmarried) which is consistent with other records showing a Hull-born Alice Ann Howlett of the right age.

Birth, Dec qtr 1846

Alice Ann HOWLETT

Engineer Southcliff Journey?

I wonder whether he's actually an "Engineer South Cliff Tramway".

Thanks very much everyone -

avm228, which other records are consistent with Alice Ann unmarried in the 1881 census?  The record for her birth is just consistent with her age?

I think you are spot on with 'tramway', I think the writing might say that, even though it looks more like 'journey' (which makes less sense!).

All I'm saying is an Alice Ann Howlett was born in the right place at the right time.  Still being called "Howlett" in 1881 is consistent with (but doesn't prove) the notion that this Alice Ann is the same person and had not by 1881 changed her name through marriage. Other consistent (but not probative) records include the 1851-1871 censuses for Alice A(nn) Howlet(t), an 1886 marriage to a Robert Medd in Gateshead, and subsequent census records of Alice Medd in Gateshead.
