1887 Fitzwilliam Lawn Tennis Club Closed Championships
« on: Friday 02 November 12 11:34 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking for basic biographical information on some of the players who took part in the men's singles event at the Fitzwilliam Lawn Tennis Club Closed Championship held in Dublin in July 1887. I have just the initials of the players' first name(s) and their family names. Here they are:

W.R. Clarke
--

G.C. de Rinzy
--

B.R. Le Fanu
--

R. Maunsell
--

T.B. Moffatt
--

R.E. Shaw
--

T.A. Tombe
-------

I'm basically looking for the date and place of birth, and the date and place of birth for the players in question.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Shane. It's a pity the Irish censuses are so poor compared with the English ones.

Hi, Shane,

Thanks for your help.

B.R. Lefanu appears to be this person: Brinsley Rankine Le Fanu, b. 10 August 1862, d. 5 February 1945. But I don't know where he was born or where he died.

I see that another early tennis player, Henry Evelyn Tombe, was born in County Wicklow in 1851. I imagine that he was the/a younger brother of Thomas Arembery Tombe.

this looks like his death in Dublin South... born a little too early for civil records...

  Name: Brinsley Renkive Le Fanu
  Registration district:   Dublin South
  Event type: Death
Quarter and year:   Jan - Mar 1945
Age : 82  (est. year of birth 1863)
  volume :   2 Page: 339

I think this may be him mistranscribed slightly in 1901...

De Fann/Cunningham household, Magheramurphy Co. Down

born Co. Wicklow

Thanks, Shane. I think that Thomas Bethune Moffatt definitely studied at Trinity College, Dublin, and was probably a brother of Charles Bethune Moffatt, who also studied there.
