Speirs Wharf Glasgow
« on: Wednesday 07 November 12 22:21 GMT (UK) »
My gr-grandmother Ann (Annie) Hastie was living at 241 Canal Bank Speirs Wharf in 1871 when she was 13 and a millworker.
I've searched all the Glasgow sites I can think of looking for info on the living conditions at Piers Wharf at that time and possibly a photo but have come up blank.
Does anyone else  have relatives living there at that period who have managed to find some info ?

Adding to what Sancti has linked, is this 'youtube' film of contemporary Spiers Wharf www.youtube.com/watch?v=ie4pCfw2iPw

Most of the buildings are under Grade B listing www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/scotland/glasgow/B

I haven't looked at an older map, but guessing Canal Street was behind Speirs Wharf? Looking at this modern map http://cartographic.info/uk_street/map.php?id=691479 shows a North Canal Bank Street and a Canal Street further south.

Great photos for there, Brian  :)

Bairn. folk usually lived near their work. Although textile mills in Glasgow were concentrated in the East End there were some in the Port Dundas area,

Brown's, South Sawfield Mill, Burn Street,
Rockvilla Weaving Factory, Possil Road,
Wellington Mills, Mary Street.

Alternatively she could have been in one of the big grain mills there,

The Wheatsheaf Mills, Lower Craighall Road,
Curries Mill, North Speirs Wharf.

Whatever, it would have been long hours & wee money! "They fairly mak ye work for yer ten & nine, them that work the hardest are the least provided!" as it says in the Dundee song whose title escapes me......."Oh dear me, the mill's gaun fest".

Skoosh.

I was born at 158 North Speirs Wharf the canal offices were 174, I think.  So if on the north bank it must have been past the City Grain Mills, however I suspect that it is a south bank number ie odd number as all ours were even numbers.

In Glasgow the numbers started with the lowest nearest to the city centre so 241 would have been a fair distance along and as far as I'm aware there weren't many houses along the south bank (1950 onwards)  Also remember that the area along the canal was known as Port Dundas and/or Speirs Wharf and extended as far as the Old Basin at Hamiltonhill and back to Pinkston Road.

Ah right I think I've got it, it's probably North Canal Bank Street which ran along the canal bank in an easterly direction and ended up at Pinkston Road.  Will check again for links, this is 76-80 North Canal Bank Street (Port Dundas Distillery) not far from my old home.  I can't remember many tenements along there but who knows.  http://www.scotlandsplaces.gov.uk/search_item/index.php?service=RCAHMS&id=166011&image_id=DP076468
