There was a foundry in 1871 @ 600 Garscube Road belonging to a Thomas Allan who also had stables and a yard at 484 Garscube Road his son also Thomas had a house at 590 Garscube Road (presume his home?).  There was a Brewery @ The Old Basin (no distance).

You see fifer I'm not just looking for lists of names and dates for my ancestors I'm also trying to understand the kind of conditions they lived in and some understanding of the lives they led so they become real people in my mind. I just find family trees with their lists of names and dates incredibly dull and lifeless.

It's called putting meat on the bones   ;)  Understanding how they lived and why they moved etc.  That's what makes it interesting because it becomes a social history of your family.

Garscube Road and Possil Road formed a Y junction, if Annie continued her work in the same mill ie Glasgow City Mills at Speirs Wharf then it was (for those days) easily within walking distance.

The safest/most likely route would have been down Garscube Road to the Possil Road junction, up Possil Road turn right into Craighall Road and there she was at the mill.  Or she may well have got a lift on a milk cart or similar.

The shorter route was down to the Y junction, up Baird's Brae (between the Oakbank Hospital and Astoria cinema - there was a dairy and stables there before the cinema) between Garscube Rd/Possil Road, onto the canal bank, cross the bridge @ top of the brae/Applecross Street and then along the north side canal bank via the sawmills @ Speirs Wharf roughly about half a mile in distance from the bridge to mill.

This site will help with canal distances http://www.canalplan.org.uk/gazetteer/ycrw

My goodness fifer you keep coming up with interesting info !!
Do  you happen to know if there still exists staff records for the mill/other major businesses which would show where Annie worked ?
I know it's a long shot but the social history is important. This particular g-granny has intrigued me since I've discovered so much about her adult life and now I'm trying to discover as much as I can about her earlier years.
Thanks again

I just don't know who would have any records tbh  :-\  You could try the Mitchell Library or National Library Scotland, the mill was the Glasgow City Flour (or Grain) Mills I believe.  Typing "City Flour Mill Port Dundas" comes up with results on google.  The name of William Hay comes up several times here for example at the bottom of the lefthand side column http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/24652/pages/6985/page.pdf   It seems to be sequestration and possibly the end of the mills being used for that use??  But using that information from 1878 may help establish whether the firm continued or not and/or whether those records still exist.

I'd ask Mitchell Library what holding they have regarding City Flour/Grain Mills first and take it from there.  Catch them today before they go on holiday!

Of further interest is the Brewery at the canal and the Old Basin Tavern which was on Baird's Brae (before the Astoria cinema) some history re owners and holdings etc  Bairds Brae was named for Hugh Baird the Brewer.

http://www.oldglasgowpubs.co.uk/oldbasintavern.html

On the other side the Oakbank Hospital (Western District Hospital) was built circa 1902  http://www.workhouses.org.uk/Glasgow/

"The Western District Hospital, locally known as Oakbank Hospital, was built in 1902-04 for the treatment of acute medical and surgical cases. It was sited on a triangular plot bounded by Possil Road, Garscube Road and a canal. Like Stobhill, it was taken over for military use during the first World War. It joined the National Health Service in 1948 but closed in 1971."
