Aaron Sinfield
« on: Thursday 08 November 12 20:34 GMT (UK) »
I am researching an Aaron Sinfield, a convict, arrived in Tasmania 16 Sept 1845 abord the Marion. I have quite a bit on his life in Tasmania but would like to know :
1) If he retiurned home at the end of his sentence. I haven't found him in the British censuses.
2) If his wife went out to Tasmania to join him.
3) If not, did he remarry while there.
4) When and where he died.

Aaron is assaulted and robbed in 1856

Had you seen this account of another assault ?

1860 hospitalised after an assault. It gives his occupation as Gardener and his location in Hobart

Hi Sue

Many thanks for your replies.
I had seen the reports on the Trove site. It seems he couldn't keep out of trouble in Tasmania either!!!!!!!!

As far as I can see, he married twice in England before he "emigrated"!!!!! both times to ladies called Mary but not with surname Rankin. He was a bit restricted with choice of wive's names as he had the initials MS tattoed on one arm, presumably his wife as he had his parent's initials tattoed on the other arm. His second wife Mary was in prison in 1851 for leaving her children for the parish to look after, they were in the workhouse!!

Many thanks again

Not sure what this means "both times to ladies called Mary but not with surname Rankin" - Mary RANKIN was the woman he married in Tasmania.

"His second wife Mary was in prison in 1851 for leaving her children for the parish to look after, they were in the workhouse!!"

Very compassionate weren't  they - 8 children and no husband, how dare she not cope!!  Sometimes I think they took 'survival of the fittest' a bit far.

Hi Debra
Many thanks for the information on Aaron. I think I know more about this man, and what he got up to, than I do of my own grandfather or most people in my family.

He was married twice in England before marrying  Mary Rankin in Tasmania. (all Marys)
There were only the 3 youngest  of his children in the workhouse in 1851. Several of the older ones I have found working as servants in the Maulden area.

His second wife Mary (nee Bassam) remarried in 1874

I have 9 Sinfield children but the yougest Ruth was probably born rather too long after Aaron had departed.

Thanks again
