Before 1837, fathers' names and occupations are not included - there simply is no specific space for this.

This tells you what information to expect to see on marriage records pre-1837:

Have you any idea where and when William Valler was born, in order to look for his baptism?  After 1813, the father's occupation is usually shown.

Hi Nell,

We have an idea when & where we think William Valler was born (South Hayling, 1812) but it's this we're trying to prove ~ or at least find evidence for ~ to connect up two generations.

We're thinking maybe William's parents were:

John Valler (bapt 12 June 1772, Chilgrove, Sussex; d 1856 Westhampnett)
Mary Anne Flewill (b 11 Dec 1778, Hayling Island, Hants; d 17 Mar 1861, West Wittering)

.. and have fairly good circumstantial evidence for this (John Valler's Will which mentions "the children of my late son William Valler [..] Letitia Valler the mother of the same children") but it all just feels as if there's something missing at the moment.  :-\

Hope this is okay, but I'm quoting your reply from the Valler/Wrapson (Portsea St Mary's) topic here, for reference & also since I guess it might prove useful to anyone else who might be searching for the same info in the future:

I'm guessing that you don't actually have the details of all the baptisms?

Harriet Frances 29 Jan 1832, Birdham, parents William & Alicia, whitesmith, buried 18 Jun 1847 Chichester St Paul, aged 15
William 7 March 1833 Chichester St Peter, parents William & Elishua (!), whitesmith of Orchard Street
Joseph 15 Mar 1835, Chichester St Peter, parents William & Alicia, whitesmith of Orchard Street
Mary Emma 7 Oct 1836, West Wittering, parents William & Alicia, whitesmith of Chichester, buried 19 July 1840 aged 2 years, Chichester St Bartholomew, from Orchard Street
Ann Elizabeth 14 Oct 1838, Chichester St Peter, parents William & Elizabeth (but William is recorded as a whitesmith again, living in Orchard Street)
George 4 Oct 1840, Chichester St Bartholomew, parents William & Alicia, blacksmith of Orchard Street
Mary 7 Apr 1844 West Wittering, parents William & Letitia, whitesmith of Chichester

I suspect that there might be another child in about 1842, but the spellings are so erratic that if there is, I've not found it  :(

John & Mary Valler/Voller had the following children baptised on Hayling Island, some in South Hayling, others in North Hayling:

Elizabeth Valler 18 Jan 1800 Nth Hayling
Harriott Valler 23 Jul 1801 Nth Hayling
Lucy Valler 24 Feb 1803 Sth Hayling
Sarah Valler 3 Nov 1804 Sth Jayling buried 22 Nov 1804
John Valler 16 Jan 1806 Sth Hayling
Mary Valler 13 Jun 1807 Sth Hayling buried 7 Jun 1814
Henry Joseph Valler 12 May 1809 Sth Hayling
James Voller 23 Dec 1810 Sth Hayling
William  Voller 9 Aug 1812 Sth Hayling.

John married Mary Flewell 20 Feb 1800 at South Hayling.

I'm thinking that this looks distinctly possible.  The will you have quoted is pretty good as evidence.

So the John who was a publican and married Rhoda, appearing in Birdham was William's brother - and William lived in Birdham for a while.  Further evidence which bolsters the case, I think.

Thanks, that's extremely helpful ~ we didn't have Harriott on our timeline, plus it's nice to have the other information confirmed (with dates, etc.)

We know William Valler (born to John & Mary) died no later than June 1846 ~ John Valler's Will refers to him as his "late" son, and was written then ~ so if you find any references to a William Valler/Voller being buried in Chichester, West Wittering or Westhampnett(?) during the mid 1840s that would be extremely helpful too!  :) We've searched everywhere we can think of for a death/burial reference which might match this, but so far without any luck.

Just by way of a follow up, we phoned West Sussex records office who checked the parish record for William & Elishua's marriage (in 1831) ~ which unfortunately didn't give William's father's name (although it did confirm Elishua's father to be Mark Edmunds.)

At the moment we're trying to find out William's death or burial dates/place, which we've narrowed down to some time 1843 or early 1844 (Mary's birth certificate from February 1844 lists her father William as "deceased".)
