Many thanks ReadyDale and MargP,  I recall trying this on Free BMD a very long time ago, quite possibly while the records for those years 1917 - 1932  were still in transcription stage.   I now have FindMyPast so will try it there.  May help with the paternal child as well.

I wonder if your parents suffered some still births or miscarriages before your successful birth 15 years after they first married. It's a long time to remain childless.

Did your dad serve in WW1 ,if you can find his service records they often mention marriage dates and childrens births.

Any pregnancies prior to my own birth must have ended either in miscarriage, stillbirth or baby died within a very short time (minutes/hours) of birth.  I have checked FindMyPast and the only recorded birth - using maiden name and surname - is my own.

Also checked Parish records on FindMyPast but I don't think they have North Yorkshire yet.

My father did not serve in the armed forces during W.W.1. I have his Army Reserve, Certificate of Protection,  issued Munitions Area,  Recruiting Office,  Middlesbrough.  Dated 11 May 1917.  I rather think - as in W.W.2. - those who could not go on active duty served in a home protection capacity.  I do remember in W.W.2. my father going out, on what I think was, Air Raid Warden duties.  Could perhaps have been Home Guard, really not sure it was a long time ago.  I doubt there would be Army Reserve service records.

Many thanks for all suggestions and information.
