Carson of Newtownhamilton/Newry
« on: Tuesday 31 May 05 09:21 BST (UK) »
My grandmother was born in Newry Co Down in  1881 and her parents were married in NewtownHamilton in 1856.
There may be a connection with Monaghan which although likely isn't proven.
One of her brothers settled in Edinborough, married and had 2 chn.
Has anyone else a connection with this family? Jill

I may be able to help you

We are originally from Newtownhamilton. My Great grandfather married a girl called Letitia Carson, the daughter of Robert Carson. Robert was a farmer and his wife was Anne Hanna.

Letitia was born in Lisdrummard on 5th July 1849

She married my GGF in the Presbyterian church in Sandys Street, Newry in 1876.

Re my previous message about Carsons in Newtownhamilton.

a) I have found a Carson family grave plot in Newtownhamilton

b) My Carson family lived in the parish of Lisnadill 3 miles south of Armagh. I have only just found the Griffiths valuation entry for them. John was dead by 1860 but there were an Esther and Anne Elizabeth (my great great grandmother) still alive at that time.

c) Have you tried the website www.failteromhat.com ? They have the Griffiths lists and a large list of Armagh Carsons in the flax growers list for 1796.

Thank you 'Preston',

I apologise for this great pause in communication but I have been abroad for a while and my genealogy details were in England.

I have seen the flax growers list for Armagh 1796 but until I get some connection back from John or James (both carpenters) to another name, I'm stuck.

I must visit the area and look at the Newry 1901 census page by page and try to find the deaths of Richard and Elizabeth.

Thanks. Let me know when you have a family tree as I am sure we fit into it somewhere
