Wonder if the shop was Carmichaels?
1930 electoral roll there are 6 Carmichaels living at the address - head is Archibald -and there are also 2 Wiseman males listed there too?

Little more info - the Carmichaels lived at that address from early 1900's - Archibald was the father - and Alice Alexandra , Robert neil, Donald and others were children of Archibald - it seems they stayed on at address after both parents had died

Thanks Suz..I have been told by my wife's elderly aunt that she remembers taking William's lunchtime sandwiches to the shop so the shop was not their home address. The aunt seems to think it was a corner shop but she was only about seven years old at that time and she's not too clear..William had only recently left the Royal Navy after 27 years service when he started the shop..Do any of the voters list that you have indicate that he was absent (a) ? We are not sure of the dates that the shop was functioning..Thanks again for your interest Suz..Very kind of you.Regards Phil

If William had recently left the Navy after 27years service  I would think it would be later than1935. William would be c. 16 years of age when WW1 broke out in 1914 -if he joined the Navy then and was in for 27 years -then it would be nearer 1940. Alot of that area was bombed during WW1.

I have also read where the Builders Arms was built 1864 and rebuilt 1891-2 on Stebondale St  at the junction of Billson St . William's address was Bilston St in 1936 - so the shop may have been somewhere near the pub -which apparantly was a "large building"

Electoral rolls have William Albert leverton at:
1918 11 Seyssel St  Poplar with Arthur lewis Justice
1930 11 Seyssel St with Elizabeth may Leverton, henry George leverton, Horace Arthur martin and Maud martin
1932 25 Stebondale St -previously posted
1933     ditto                    ditto

1934 25 Stebondale St William is absent , present are Alice Alexandra carmichael, jessie Elizabeth carmichael, Robert neil carmichael and Margaret leverton
1935 25 Stebondale St William Albert is absent -present are Alice Alexandra Carmichael, Archibald Carmichael. Jessie Elizabeth carmichael and margaret leverton
1936, 37, 38 they are at 7 Billson St
1839 7 Billson St is margaret Rebecca leverton, William Albert leverton, Annie Clark macDonald, Albert Southerton

Hope this helps in some way.

The 1939 Classified Telephone Directory has Cubitt Town Radio Stores at 475 Manchester Road, E14. Stebondale St then had two junctions with Manchester Road at around Nos 50 and 315. I estimate she'd have had to walk 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile to reach 475. Ask her if that sounds right.

There are other radio dealers/engineers listed, but further away. And, of course, he won't be there if he didn't have a telephone.
Researching Penge, Anerley, (including the Crystal Palace) and neighbouring parts of Beckenham, currently in London (Bromley), formerly Surrey and/or Kent.

Thanks Suz and Chris..Your help is amazing!..William never spoke to me about his Navy service although we were friends (and in-laws)..He joined the navy as a cadet;about 14 I guess. He and Margaret got married in 1932 after his "sign-on" period was ended..He then for some reason joined the Columbian Navy based at Cartegena..That must be the 1934-1935 voters list time that he was absent. He did give the impression that he was a radio telegrapher instructor..He would playfully test my knowledge of morse code by tapping on the dining room table! I have e-mailed the Columbian National Archive Dept. for any information they may hold. Not in Spanish!.I am not banking on a reply. The info on radio shop needs following up so looking forward to chat with aged aunt..Once again thanks a lot.Regards Phil
