Marriage Licence
« on: Thursday 22 November 12 03:01 GMT (UK) »
Hello. What information would I expect to find on a marriage licence from 1745? and how would I go about seeing or purchasing said licence?
Thanks

See reply #9 by John at http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,303161.0.html for a couple of examples of marriage licence information

If the marriage was in Beds I'd try Bedford Archives

Beds Archives have transcripts of marriage licences but they start at 1747 so your marriage is two years too early. However they may hold the original.
Census information is Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk
Partridge - North Beds; Northants & Peterborough
Bishop - Bedford; Hunts, Hemingford Grey
Allen - Hunts, Hemingford Abbotts
Clement - Croydon

Do you know for sure there was a marriage licence? What is it that you're hoping to find on the licence?

In many cases you will be able to find the allegation rather than the actual licence.  The licence will tell you little if anything more than that the parish register entry.  The allegation can provide other information about the circumstances under which the licence was issued.  These can in particular include the value of any bond entered into, the names of any supporters etc
