Can't find name in Griffiths, know it is there
« on: Saturday 24 November 12 16:18 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to find Halleran/ Holloran/ O'Holloran, other variations, in Griffiths, in Tuam, County Galway.   Lots of them lived there.   I specifically know that a Patrick O'Holloran owned land there in 1878, and that in 1831 Tithe Applotment, he was in Gardenfield townland, Tuam parish, Co Galway.

Can someone please help me with finding these people in Griffiths.  Thanks!

Yours,
Dora Smith

You can see the occupants of Gardenfield n Griffiths Valuation here

No one of that name.

and Tuam parish here

There are a couple of Halloran entries.

http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=nameSearch  has several entries for Patrick Halloran and one for O'Halloran but none are Tuam parish.
Census Information is Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

(Think I'm saying much the same as heywood here)
As you say there are quite a few in Galway,25 Patrick Halloran and 1 Patrick O'Halloran but none in Gardenfield which only has 6 names.

The Patrick of the Tithe applotment and the Patrick of 1878 could be Grand father and Grand son in which case an O Halloran of a different name could be in Griffiths, but in any case they seemed to have moved from Gardenfield. Have you got them in the 1901 Census.

If a daughter got the farm and married it would be in her husband's name, the Patrick you are looking for could have married into another farm, with his sister getting the place in Gardenfield

Actually I knew Patrick was there in 1831 and again in 1878.  Turns out in Griffiths Edmund lived in the next townland.

Problem seems to be that the Griffiths I'm using isn't searching related spellings like it's supposed to.

Maybe Patrick was there too but I didn't find him yet.

Thanks!

Dora

I've gone page by page through Tuam Parish and can only see Edmund, and nothing that looks like that surname any where else, Sorry.

When and where did your Patrick O'Halloran die?
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Don't know.   I imagine he died right there.    So far I'm only supposing that he may be mine.

When I said 'your Patrick O'Halloran' I meant the one you were looking for.

The civil registration index lists deaths in Tuam district for 8 Patrick Hallorans (various spellings) of which there are only 2 possibilities to be the one you are looking for.
1. (1805-1875) https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FRBD-S59
2. (1825-1858) https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FR5Y-JZ7

1. could be in Tithe list but not in 1878 list
2. too young to be in Tithe list and can't be in 1878 list

So, can you explain how "actually I knew Patrick was there in 1831 and again in 1878."

What 1878 list?

I know that a problem with the tithe applotment is that a great big, multi-generation family could live on a piece of land and only the "head of household" would be listed.
