George White - born c1612
« on: Sunday 25 November 12 21:37 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help identify the birth/ baptism and/or the parents of George White, please?

An inscription from Tewin, Hertfordshire in 1692 gives this detail:

"Here lyeth the Body of
George White Gent
Who descended lineally from
Ralph White Esq
Of Feifeild Manor in the County
of Berks
....
In the 80th Year of his age"

Does that mean that George was born in Fifield? I cannot find a birth in Hertfordshire in 1612. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Alan

Hi

Taken from a visitation of Berkshire,

William White of Reading in Co. of Berks had two sons

Sir Thomas White (1492-1567) founder of St Johns College in Oxford and was Lord Mayor of London 1554.

Radulphus (Ralph) White of Fyfield.

Ralphs  son was Georgius White of Fyfield 1569 who married Maria dau. of William Land of London.

Georgius's son was Fransiscus White of Fifeeld who married Margareta sister of Thomas Badger, Knight.

Fransiscus children were ~ Thomas, (son and heir)  , Edwardus second son, GEORGIUS, Maria and Elizabetha.

Brilliant - thanks very much.

I haven't got back this far with any other family lines, so I'm in unknown territory.

The George White from Tewin Herts had a great-grandaughter who married someone from Bray in Berkshire; I'm thinking that is unlikely to have been a co-incidence.

Hi Alan,

In the transcripts of Fyfield, Berks as issued by the Oxfordshire FHS there are several "Whites".

Unfortunately the registers from about 1583 were damaged in a fire when the church burnt down in 1883 rendering them useless for reference purposes but the following are taken from the BTs.
These are taken with permission from the OFHS.

Baptisms;
19-4-1612   Edward White  s/o Francis
22-10-1616 Elizabeth  "      d/o     "      gent.
1-4-1619     Francis     "      s/o     "
24-5-1634   George     "        "   Mr.George White

Burials;
10-6-1605   George    White gent
2-3-1620     Frauncis       "      "
6-1-1622     Francis         "      "
27-12-1680  Charles        "
25-10-1688  Mary            "    w/o Henry Esq.
8-9-1720      Mr.Thomas    "   s/o Francis White Esq.
6-1-1738      Francis          "   Esq

Not sure if any of the above will fit in with your family.
There are a few marriages  which start in 1720 - 1893 and can list if you wish them.

Hope these are of some help.

Hi Alan,

That's a huge help - thanks.

I will need to spend a while trying to map this family out now, and maybe get back to you. It certainly appears that  the George White who died in Tewin Hertfordshire in 1692 was the son of Francis from Fyfield.... that has been a missing link.

George's great-grandaughter, Sarah Pitts, married John Winder in London (in 1733). The Winders came from Bray, not too far from Fyfield and I'd imagine that there is some link between the Whites and the Winders; even if only in terms of being the same social status and knowing each other.

There are several pieces to this jigsaw puzzle, and I'll try and focus on one at a time, as its easy (and tempting) to rush ahead and make too many assumptions.

Thanks again; that is a great help and hugely appreciated.

Bray, not too far from Fyfield
Hi Alan,

Glad to have been of some help.

Unless there is another Fyfield that I don't know of, the two parishes are miles apart; Bray on the eastern side of Berks whilst Fyfield is in the north west of Berks
on the old Berks / Oxfordshire borders.

There is a Fifield midway between Holyport and Oakley Green (near Maidenhead).

It was the 'Fifield' near Maidenhead which I'd found on a map - that is near Bray, which is why I'd made the connection.

So the White baptisms are from a place of the same name, but not that Fifield/ Fyfield?
(...the inscription from Hertfordshire says 'Fiefield' and place names clearly change their spelling over time)

That makes no difference to the White line, but makes my assumption about the proximity of the two places wrong!

That just proves the problem with making assumptions! In both the extended White and Winder families around that time there are Anglican clergymen and both families appear to have been comparatively wealthy and have had strong links to London.
