Boston arrivals 1844 lookup- James Quinn?
« on: Tuesday 31 May 05 21:33 BST (UK) »
What we have for information is:

James Quinn, born Ballintra, County Donegal, 1828.  Immigrated to America in 1844, landing in Boston.  He stayed in Boston until 1857, then moved to Minnesota.

We do know that James came to America with 3 others - one was named Patrick Quinn.  It could have been 2 brothers and a sister.  Patrick was killed in Boston just a couple of years after arriving.

Possible ports of departure - Sligo or Galway, but we are unsure.  Could someone possibly help find James Quinn from Donegal leaving in 1844 and arriving in Boston?

Many thanks for the help!  Patty Quinn

Hi Quinn

Early Emmigration is pretty sparse and it a lot of cases there are no manifests to look at - and this is one of those cases -  at least for me - but one was Boston and one Baltimore - don't know if those work for you..???

Name James Quinn Year 1844 Place Baltimore Primary Immigrant Quinn, James

this information is added -
Date and place of declaration of intention to become a citizen or of naturalization. Extracted from records filed and recorded in Baltimore City and Baltimore County Courts between the end of the American Revolution and 1851. Country of origin, date and type of document recorded, names of witnesses and other genealogical information are also provided.

Name: Patrick Quinn Year: 1844  Age: 47 Place: Boston Primary Immigrant: Quinn, Patrick

Date of death and place of burial. Place of nativity in Ireland, date of birth, and gravestone inscription may also be provided. Other historical and genealogical data is also provided. If you send me a PM I'll send you some extra information

I'm looking it all over, and comparing everything to the tid bits that we have.  We think it looks fairly good and we are trying to see if we can fit it, and that it's right.

It could definitely explain why we've never found James arriving in Boston.  I only know that he didn't come through Ellis Island, although other family did at a later date.

I"m wondering if James might have landed at Grosse Ile for a while before ending up in Boston, but I'm still researching all of that.

Thank you for the info!  I have my fingers crossed that it will turn out to be the right person/people!!

Hi Patty

Well Ellis Island didn't start till around 1892 -  so stuff before that -  is a little hit and miss
Have you been able to do much with the census??

I'll still keep looking and I'll post if I find something OK?

Regards

Annie

I can find James in every census he should be listed in.  It's finding the arrival ship, the confirmed port of arrival, and ANY proof of him naturalizing as a citizen that's the problem.

We hope that by finding some of this (especially naturalization documents) that we will be able to possibly find his father's FULL name, which will give us a window of info to work with back in Ireland.  Looking for a John Quinn in ANY county in Ireland is a nightmare in itself! LOL

What we have is the known fact that we descend from King Niall.  This is from the relatives in Ireland.  Then, about 1765, there seems to be this "bubble" of information that's missing.  The bubble comes back into line with James in 1828, and straight down to today to me.

We are trying to get the descendancy line straight back, because even though we are part  of the original septs of Ireland, we want to OFFICIALLY re-establish the family line as a recognized official member of the Dalcassian Clan and also a member of the Septs of Ireland.

So, until we fill this little "bubble" of missing info, it can't be done.  ACK!

Interesting - VERY interesting!  So far, every DONEGAL Quinn that I have been able to do any research on has ended up related to me somewhere along the line!  Thanks for these.  You might have just found a couple more relatives for me!

I'll send the names over to Ireland, see if anything rings a bell!.... the arrival dates are certainly close to the majority of when our family came over!

Thanks again!  Patty
