Edith F Driver published a book of her photographs in 1927 entitled 'Souvenir of HMS Ganges'.

HMS Ganges was a shore training base at Shotley, near Ipswich, where new recruits to the Royal Navy underwent their initial training.  I am therefore wondering whether  Clem was doing his training at HMS Ganges when that photo was taken.

Hi GS thanks for that! Yes you are most likely right, Clem Short s mother was Lena Hayes my mothers Aunt who left Ireland about 1908 and never came back. The Shorts lived in Sutton Surrey and Clem later joined the Navy and sent home this postcard to Eire. They have proved a hard family to trace so far so any info i can get is valuable thanks!

My brother did his RN training at HMS Ganges and took part in the manning of the mast.  It was spectacular and the high point of all of their open days.
