Carnaska Church
« on: Friday 30 November 12 14:22 GMT (UK) »
The church was refurbished in about 1910 (source  Roscommon county web site) The windows were presented by various local people. This accoring to inscriptions on the windows. One was presented byn my grandfather Edward Campbell. Henry Campbell who may have been Edward's brother presented another. Is there anywhere I can get further information about all this.
Thank you

Hello,

is it just the window information you require?

It's quite difficult to find anything about the church where I would imagine the records would be but you may get some information from the diocesan records http://www.elphindiocese.ie/ perhaps.

The church is in the Strokestown area which you probably know.

1901 and 1911 show Henry and Edward Campbell and families in Coggalstack. Is that your family?

regards
heywood

Edward is my grandfather, Henry I think is his brother. The inscription on Edward's window fits in with what is known. The inscription on Henry's window does not tie in with what is known. So either there is an error in the inscription or it is a different Henry. (Can't locate the inscription at the moment but will post if I find it). Edward did have a brother Henry which is confirmed by the account of his funeral in the Strokestown Democrat of 13/2/1932.
Thanks for the Elphin link, I will contact them

Have you tried any other Henry Campbells in Roscommon at that time?

I'm not sure you will get much help from the diocese - I was hoping that the church would have a site but it is very difficult to find any references to it.

From my limited experience, people would often be asked to contribute to building work by donating money for windows/ pews etc and then a record made on the items.

I hope there is some written record still there about it for you.

Yes I have tried looking for other Henrys. Both Inscriptions give a location which is a very sparsley populated area. Edward is given as Cagglestack and I have visited there. I am sure Henry was the same - as for along time I thought he was unconnected with my family I think I may have lost the words on his window- which is why my personal leaning is towards confusion with names on the Inscription. There is no church site or one for Strokestown either.

I can't see a reference to the windows to check.

Griffiths Valuation has both Edward and Henry in Cogglestack - neither would be the ones in the censuses so perhaps they were cousins?

Could one of the windows be a memorial window to a previous Henry or Edward?

Yes - that is what I meant and like the ones I have seen.

Do you have the marriage certificates of Edward and Henry (from 1901/11 censuses) to check their fathers?

Carnaska Church is in the parish of Strokestown, so if you contact Strokestown parish office they may have information you need.
