walkers court, porter street, liverpool abt 1850
« on: Sunday 02 December 12 14:34 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Please can anyone help me with locating the exact location for Walkers Court, on Porter Street in Liverpool in about 1850? I know that Porter Street ran approx north to south from Great Howard St to Regent Rd/Waterloo Rd, but I'm trying to find exactly on Porter St, Walkers Court was. Does anyone know if it was nearer the Great Howard St end or the Regent/Waterloo Rd end? I'd be very grateful for any help,

Thanks,

Chris

Chris.

Not really an answer to Your Question, but here is a link for the Street Index for 1851 Census of Liverpool (letter 'P'): www.liverpool-genealogy.org.uk/Streets1851/StreetsP.htm

From this You will be able to find the enumerators index codes, which are:

Porter Street, Walkers Court. LVRO Index: 2177.2.1   PRO Piece No: 2177  Enumeration District: 1ss   Index Volume No: 06

from this info, you should be able to find them on the 1851 Census Map of Liverpool.

I would do this for You myself (if I was at Home, were I have My Census Sets) but out at relatives at present.

Hertzberger, Highton, Walker, Eaton, Webster, Brown, Wright, Speed, Dodd, Holland, Melling, Murphy, Edwards, Bennett, Collins, Critchley, Duffy, Owens, Morgan & Humphreys

Hi Pegasuss,

Thanks for that - I really do appreciate it. Unfortunately, I have tried to get the 1851 census map for Liverpool online, but have failed (I cannot seem to get one with sufficient magnification)! Please can you help (I don't mind waiting)?

Thanks,

Chris

Chris.

If You had replied an Hr or two sooner I was in mine & would have been able to search the map that I have on disc.

I will see if I can read the Online map? Cant access 1851 Map online.

Have posted your query on Liverpool & South West Lanc's Forum (if I get a reply soon I will post it Here.

Chris.

I think this reply I received from a L&SW Lancs member will be what you need:

"On the 1851 Census Walkers Court is listed as between 50 & 56 of Porter Street, HO107. Piece: 2177. Folio 253. Page 41."

There's a Walker's Buildings on my map from around that time. It was on the north side of Porter Street about half way between Great Howard Street and Regent Road.

Hi Pegasuss and Blue,

Thank you very much for your kind replies, I really do appreciate your efforts on my behalf. Please, does anyone know exactly where 50 - 56 Porter Street was (in relationship to Great Howard St and Regent Road). I'm sorry to be a nuisance, but I'm researching  a particular family which was living in Walker's Court, Porter St and  I'm just wondering if this could have been described as Gt Howard St?

Thanks,

Chris

Walkers Court or Walkers Building was definitely in Porter Street not in Great Howard Street. Porter Street is off Great Howard Street. I can't upload my map on here for copyright reasons unfortunately.

Hi Blue,

Thanks again for that - I had hoped that Walkers Court would be on the corner of Gt Howard St and Porter St, but at least I now that it wasn't, thanks to you and Pegasuss.

Thanks again,

Chris
