Stanley Street Glasgow
« on: Sunday 02 December 12 14:56 GMT (UK) »
Would anyone know anything about 1 Stanley Street Glasgow. It is in the Kinning Park area. My ancestor lived there & worked as a Domestic Servant & I wanted to know if anyone knew of any history of the building. Could it be that it was a tenement building & she just resided there or was it a large house employing staff etc?
Many Thanks

Are you certain it was the one in Kinning Park - at one time there were 3 different Stanley Streets co-existing in Glasgow.

PS Some tenement buildings were built for the middle classes and had facilities for servants

Hi,

I didn't realise there was once 3 stanley streets in Glasgow.
It is stated on her marriage certificate that she was a domestic servant living at 1 Stanley Street in 1874.Her husband lived in Warroch Street which is Anderston. She actually moved down to Glasgow from Wick & is not in Wick on the 1871 census. I haven't found her on 1871 census. I just summised she lived in the  Stanley Street Kinning Park which I went to see when I came up to Glasgow researching many years ago.

Hello,

Her name was Jane Ryrie & she was born in Wick around 1852 She married Alexander Robertson 1874 at 2 Berkeley Terrace Glasgow. In 1881 they lived at Marlow Street & in 1891 not long before she died they lived at Lambhill Street Plantation which is close to Kinning park isn't it?

Hello,

Thank you for that. It could be her as they put different ages down all thr time. She died in 1893 & her age is 39 which means her birth year was 1853/54.
