Irwins from Aghanloo/Rathfad
« on: Wednesday 19 November 08 00:34 GMT (UK) »
Hello .
I'm a two year old researcher new to genealogy and RootsChat, trying to find a wedding date for my 2G Grandfather John Irwin and wife Jane surname unknown. Jane died 17th July 1873 aged 63yrs, John died 15 Feb 1883 aged 77yrs, both had been living in Tircorran, Aghanloo, N'limavady. The ages at the time of death suggest birth dates of John 1806 and Jane 1810, any help or suggestions would be very much appreciated. Belfast Beau. :)
Irwin. Limavady / Coleraine/Belfast.
Harvey. Liverpol / Dublin/ Belfast.
Hewitt. Co.Armagh / Co. Down.
Dickson.lanark Scotland / Ballymoney/ Belfast
Porter. Mackeral / Mackerel. Surrey

Hi Jcass.
Thanks anyway it was a two horse race, and as usual I pick the wrong one. Could I ask you try Tircorran Agahanloo. I have a John Irwin Married to Jane no maiden name, Sons Daniel, William,Alexander who died 1875, I have dates for the weddings and Alexander's death but two others Thomas and Martha are proving elusive. Any help greatly appreciated. Belfast Beau.

Civil registration of Catholic marriages in Ireland started in 1864 (from 1845 for other marriages). There will be no marriage certificates before these dates. For earlier records you need to search for church records (if they exist). Going by the estimated birth years of John and Jane Irwin it's more than likely they were married before 1845.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

At the time of Griffiths valuation [1858-1859], John Irwin was residing in the townland
of Rathfad in Aghanloo parish residing in a house valued at 10 shillings, which he rented
from a William Fleming. His name is also listed in Tircorran but he did not reside there - he appears to have been looking after or in charge of a Limestone quarry of 16 perches[disused]. There was no valuation associated with the quarry, which suggests again that it was not in use. It was on the estate of the Marquis of Waterford.

The 1831 census [head of households only] lists only 2 Irwin families in the parish of Aghanloo:
Widow Irwin in Ballyhenry and Jervais Irwin in Dirtagh.

Church records are sparce for the parish of Aghanloo but the parish was close enough to Limavady it is always possible that the family may have had church links to the town

Hi jcass.
I have a problem with this finding, My Gx3 grandmother Jane died Tircorran 17th July 1873 aged 63 Yrs. So the Martha daughter of John Irwin and Jane Hutton would have been born the year after her mother died. The death details for both John and Jane are registered, in  Ireland register of deaths, Newtownlimavady, Bellarena. Is Bellarena a different townland?
Regards Belfast Beau. :)
