use of a building in 1940 census
« on: Friday 07 December 12 17:30 GMT (UK) »
hi on looking up the 1940 census in my research came across 1150 Franklin St., Johnstown, Cambria, Pennsylvania.  For this entry there are nuns listed.  Would anyone know what this building was used for or how could I find out.  Would this be a hospital???

If only nuns are listed at the address - it's more likely to be a convent.

If it was a hospital - there should be the names of patients as well

I think I found the census page that you're referring to.  If so, the nuns were at 1000 Franklin St. and Mercy Hospital is written right below the 1000.

I don't know if there was only one Johnstown in Pennsylvania, but
1940 Johnstown, PA City Directory
Smith, Albert T (Wm H Smith & Sons) h 1150 Franklin

I found Albert T. Smith on the 1940 census and he was on the same page as the nuns, but the nuns were at 1000 Franklin.
