Please help with dating this photo
« on: Monday 10 December 12 03:06 GMT (UK) »
My grandmother had this photo in her house. It is a photo on cardboard, the cardboard was cut to fit a frame I guess. No writing on the back, no photographer's name or date or anything. It looks like the woman is posed in a photographer's studio though.

I would dearly like to know what date this might be. I am guessing very late 1800s, possibly early 1900s? It could possibly be my great aunt who was alive from 1893 to ????? My last notation for her is the 1911 census in Belturbet, Ireland.

Just having a guess

- but I have similar photos of my Grandmother and I think Edwardian  - first decade of 1900s - can't co closer than that - and could be wrong even with that guess.

If I am correct, and if it is your aunt born 1893, then it has to be late  in the decade - her hair is up so late teens at least I am guessing.

Hopefully Jim or China will be along, when they wake up, to give a more accurate estimate!   ;)

Thanks! I have another question--do you think there is something wrong with her right hand? It looks covered in some way.

I wondered that - I haven't downloaded to enlarge it for a closer look - couldn't just be a glove could it??   :-\

If you would like someone to have a go at cleaning it, you will need to add the request to the title on your original post!

Maybe you are well able to do it for yourself - of maybe you prefer then left as is!  :)

It's like she's got a different cuff for the right hand. I don't think cleaning it would make it any clearer though.

No it doesn't - but it does take away the black spots -  I can't tell with enlargement but there does seem something a little different - and no evidence of the glove from the other hand lying around.  The other cuff might just be lying along her left hand - not kicked up like the right hand cuff seems to be!

She is so beautiful and you've done such a good scan I have been having a play for my own amusement!!  ;)     Won't post unless you say to though!

A play? Sorry, don't understand as I am a newbie :) If I upload a photo of the person I think is her sister are you any good at guessing family relationships?

Some people like to play with dolls, some with trains....our photo restorers like to "play" with beautiful old photos :) Tidying them and making them alive once again :)

About 1905-1910 for a date, the lady has the puffy blouse front in the style of the times known as pigeon-breasted.

I think she has the same cuff on both sleeves, as you can just see the frill dropping below the railing. I suggest she may have been unmarried, as even at this late date married ladies were usually posed to show a wedding ring.

If you post any more photos for restoration or dating, it's best to scan in colour as this may be a dating clue. Also try to show as much of the photo as possible including the surround.

Isn't she beautiful :)

Cheers,
