well, people weren't asked for thye birthdate so often as we are now, probably once every 10 years when the census came round, so not surprising if there are discrepancies. Thomas & Samuel both made their marks, so hadn't had much education. I woulnd't worry about the odd age discrepancy if it's obvious from census entries that it's the same family.
