My grandfather Joseph Hosford who joined the RIC in Wexford was born in cork city in 1840 and I now know almost all his history. We are now stuck! His father according to GRO records was a William Hosford a schoolmaster presumably lived somewhere in Cork so he is my great grandfather. His birth date must be around 1815. Cannot find anything on him in the records. Are there any school records I can peruse? anyone know of a Hosford family in Cork that may have these connections. Not yet at the desperate stage but getting there! I live in Melbourne Australia so the scourge of distance is telling lol Thanks to anyone who can help - much appreciated.

Hi, what denomiation were your Hosford family?
www.nationalarchives.ie/census  On the 1901 census there are 128 hosfords listed for Cork both City & County of denominations RC & C0I

www.irishgenealogy.ie  Lists Baptisms & Marriages for Diocese Cork & Ross

There is a William Hosford baptised 5th June 1815 Parish Skibbereen (Creagh & Sullon) area Cork & Ross. Parents William Hosford & Mary Regan.

You will probably receive a reply from a moderator on this site more familiar with the area  than I am. :)

I think this Hosford family were Church of Ireland - there's a previous post which mentions Joseph living in Monksland, Carlingford - presumably after he retired ?

see : help with RIC service number

Joseph and the family are listed as 'Irish Church' - so Church of Ireland
Remember to check the Resource boards :  Ireland, Dublin, Antrim & Cork (and stickies at the top of other county sub-forums)

There are still Hosfords, now Catholics, in Carlingford.  The Hosfords of Tracton and Ballyfeard parishes, Co. Cork, were mixed RC and C of I.

Co of I parish records for Cork city are available here for a fee
http://www.cork.anglican.org/resources/genealogy.html

Whether school records are available probably depends on what kind of school he worked in. You could check out the street directories on www.corkpastandpresent.ie. If he worked in a national school at some point, the best place for records is the National Archives.
