Name Pronunciation
« on: Wednesday 12 December 12 22:08 GMT (UK) »
Hello, I've come across family from Ireland with the surname of Mullee.

Can anyone tell me how this name is pronounced? They were born in Mayo, if that makes any difference.

Thank you!

Hi again, it looks as though it could be pronounced as mullee, mulloy, molloy and even miley.

Thank you.

I'm wondering if the double e has a standard pronunciation in Irish.
Is the "ee" pronounced the way "oy" would be pronounced in English?

This name is written in the English language rather than Irish. The same as any other country there can be local differences in pronunciation but I guess the likely way would be the same as 'ee' in English. That said, is this still the prevalent spelling for the surname? It's similar as well to Millea the last syllable of which would be pronounced 'ay' with a long 'a' (at least where I'm from!)

Thank you.
The chart in the link is similar to one I used to have but cannot find, so I really appreciate it.

I don't know how the name is spelled today. It is the maiden name of my great great grandmother, whose son emigrated to the US. Other family members with the Mullee name seem to have come over at about the same time and I find them all living within a short distance of each other here in the US.

I don't actually know anyone today with the name, I just wanted to make sure I was saying it correctly when I think about or talk about family members I am trying to learn more about.

Thanks, again!

There is also another variant Malee (pronounced Mahlee or just Malee) and some of these families come from the area around Westport in Mayo.

Thanks for your help. That is interesting about Westport. I think that this family lived around the Kiltimagh area, which I think is not too far from Westport. I have an 1846 marriage there and I keep finding the same names showing up on records in that area.
