Pronunciation, i think there should be maybe a forum on this subject in the Ireland section ?
I live in Ireland, and over the years have noticed some different sounds, ie

Walsh, often pronounced Welsh, in Gaelic Irish it is Breathnach, pronounced"Brannak

Naughton, in England we would pronunce it  "Norton", but in Ireland it is pronounced "Nockton", in Gaelic, = Nechtain

As can be seen in the two above, immigrants could have pronounced their name at point of entry in whatever way  they were used to and seeing that many could not write, their surname could be what the immigration official thought it might br phonetically !
Maybe the Irish moderators could add more?. it may help members searching Irish roots ?
