Little Cambridge near Portreath - location?
« on: Wednesday 12 December 12 22:46 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for the location of "Little Cambridge" near Portreath, Cornwall

My ancestor Maurice THOMAS owned the property "Little Cambridge"  in the 1840s-1850s and possibly earlier. He did not live on it.  I can't find mention of Little Cambridge in 1841 census but it appears in 1861 census and 1871 census.
In 1856 it was occupied by William DAVEY or his undertenants.

Does anyone know where it is/was?

Barb

If you've found it on 1861/1871 census then surely you know where it is?

Census does not give exact location and Little Cambridge does not appear on maps

Who lived there in 1861 and 1871? You can do some detective work by checking the neighbouring properties on the census until you come across a street or other landmark that still exists today. It's then just a matter of comparing old and new maps to narrow down an approximate (if not exact) location if you want to see if it still exists today.

Can I ask how you know that he owned the property in the 1840s/1850s?

Have you found the property in 1851? If so, who is lving there?

Just an idea but if the name Cambridge has been transcribed,; could it have been transcribed wrongly? There is a place a few miles inland from Portreath called Cambrose. I haven't looked myself if there is (was) a Little Cambrose but it might be worth a look.

There is a "Cambridge Farm" & "Cambridge Barn" located on New Portreath Road, Redruth.  Coming from Redruth, heading towards Portreath, it is the first lane on the right after the Cambrose/ Porthtowan turning. Perhaps Little Cambridge was also in this location?

Just got back on RootsChat after solving a login problem.  The name of the property was definitely  spelt Cambridge - I have a newspaper ad for the sale of the property in the 1850s.
Could well be the Cambridge Farm/Barb suggested by strayer. Will follow this up.
