Is there no mention of John's mother on his death certificate? If he died in Scotland his parents details would be on his death certificate.If Jean got married, her new surname would be on there.Assuming that he kept in touch with her & knew of her, that is!

It says Jane Duncan (not married to deceased's father). I posted the photo excerpt in the other thread, but here it is again. :)

It seems a wonderful Roots Chatter has given me a present for Winter Solstice and had a peek at the Kirk session for me! I now have confirmation that Jane Duncan and John Milton had John Milton jr out of wedlock and he paid a penalty. Thanks again Fiona! The people on this board are so very kind.

The first two names on the list of children of James Milton and Janet Wilson were in fact the daughters of James Milton and Ann Brandie.

Ann Milton bap 1788, died Kintore 30 Nov 1868
Margaret Milton bap 1789, died Auchterless 16 Mar 1866.

I suspect that Ann Brandie died, and that  Janet Wilson was James' second wife, because the dates fit - can anyone confirm?

Also, to add - James Milton was described as a master blacksmith on Margaret Milton's death cert, and as a blacksmith on Ann Milton's death cert.  If James Milton, husband of Janet Wilson, was described as a blacksmith on any of the death certs of their children, that might help confirm that it was the same person.
