1911 Census England & Wales re Co Monaghan
« on: Monday 24 December 12 10:40 GMT (UK) »
A relative gave his place of birth as Anaglough , Co Monaghan in the 1911 Census of England & Wales

I have looked at both Townland Indexes (a) Placenames Database of Ireland and (b) The IreAtlas Townland Database but can't seem to find it in either, anyone any ideas?

A copy of the relevant part of the census form is attched (I hope!) ;)

People spelled place names differently all the time in Ireland. Variations like this are very common.

Merry Christmas to you too.

The townland looks to be spelled Aghnaglogh in the 1901 census. Have you looked to see if there any people of the surname you are interested in there then? (Check Griffiths Valuation too, where its Annaglogh.) That could help confirm it's the place you are looking for.

The townland name in Irish is Achadh na gCloch (field of the stone building). I think anything that sounds similar in English is a possible match, so wouldn't be concerned about the 'missing' u or the extra n on the townland Index... Several variations in spelling on Logainm - Aghnaghlogh, Aughnalough, Annaglough, Ath na Clogh.. etc

see : http://www.logainm.ie/Viewer.aspx?text=Annaglogh&streets=yes
