Need a 1616 will reading
« on: Wednesday 26 December 12 13:27 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I've obtained a 1616 will of my (about) 11x ggrandfather but can hardly understand a word. It's over 2 pages, with a final piece in what maybe latin.

For copyright reasons I can't post the will, so please PM me if you can help.
Thanks, John

In trying to help with this will, I'm having difficulty with a surname
which occurs for a beneficiary in the will and also in the probate endorsement
in place of the named executor. Opinions on the rightness or not of this
name appreciated.

My reading of the snippets I am going to post:

xxjd  It[e]m I give towards the releife of the poore
in Spalding iijs iiijd to be distributed unto them when the dole is given
upon St Thomas day next after my decease It[em] I give to Msr Hutchinson
our minister of Spalding

Joh[ann]e Hutchinson Cl[er]ico Curato de Spaldinge

Hi vv - I would also read the name as Hutchinson :)

Seeing that long-tailed "H" is helpful for the other will we've been looking at where we weren't sure of the initial letter of a surname - I think it may be H after all.

Yes, there is a close correspondence. This writer puts tails on the lower case 'h' as well,
but the other will writer didn't, which made me unsure.  :)

shall come to theire said age then I will the ___ to ____
the porcon of the deceased to be equally devided amongst them
