Wondering if the Herman Oppenheimer we are interested in, of 34 Christchurch Road, actually died in March 1925, aged 82 (I think the one mentioned above who died in 1826 aged 69 was another 'Hermann Oppenheimer')

I agree.  I should have checked his age :-[.

Tracing the siblings:
Bertha - married 1905 (to Adolf Wustinger?)
Selene - never married, died 1963 - address 34 Christchurch Road, probate to Cyril Fletcher and Betty Fletcher (nee Hymans, I think, see below)
Estella - married 1907 to Herbert Hymans.  (http://archive.thejc.com has a mention of Mrs Estella Hymens at 34 Christchurch Road in 1916 - search for phrase "34 Christchurch").  She died in 1959, probate in 1960 - address 34 Christchurch Road, probate to Cyril Trevellian Fletcher.
Marcus - married 1912 to Edith Lucy Parry, but they appear to have divorced.

If this is the family, they've got some famous links!

It does seem quite possible that either because Henry/Harry was trying to hide his German/Jewish background, or for some other reason, that he took the name "Chandler".  Perhaps he did spend a few years in Australia, hence claiming that background.

Query: have you sighted the original of the 1909 marriage? I know the indexed version is on familysearch, but the original may have a few tidbits of info that could help break the brick wall down.

Other things to check:
in 1911, what does Julia Oppenheimer list under number of children born to this marriage, and the number living/died?
According to his arrival in 1913, Harry Chandler naturalised in 1913 in Nassau.
You can search for the reference numbers for his naturalisation here:
http://italiangen.org/records-search/naturalizations.php
You can order the records from Nassau:

Looks as if the Herman Oppenheimer and his siblings were born in Zwolle, Netherlands and HIS father, Emmanuel, born in Poland.

From: The Jewish Victorian: Genealogical Information from the Jewish Newspapers, 1871-1880
H. Oppenheimer, marriage 21.8.1872 at 52 Mildmay Park, by Rev. the Chief Rabbi, assisted by Revs Mr Samuel and Mr Harris, son of the late Rev E Oppenheimer, Zwolle, Holland, to Julia, second daughter of Mr H Van Delder

The same publication lists the marriage of Herman's sister, Esther (elsewhere Hester) to Barend Winkle/el - looks like they and their children lived in Holland and London at different times

I'm unsure of how the site dutchjewry.org gets its sources but it does has a listing for Emmanuel Oppenheimer born 1782 Wolstein, Poland, married in Zwolle in 1822

I am also looking into the Oppenheim/er family.  I have not came across Herman, but if he is the son of Emanuel Oppenheimer then I can say that the family did settle in London.  Herman's brother would of been John Edward Oppenheim or (Jacob Emanuel) born 1808 Zwolle Netherlands.
By the looks of things the family came from Poland, moved to the Netherlands then onto London.
John born 1808 later moved to New Zealand, and I wonder if Herman also moved towards Australia?
Hope this is of some help.  Most interested to know if Herman is Johns brother.

WHITAKER of Guiseley Yorkshire and New Zealand
LYALL, of Dundee, Caithness and New Zealand

And far too many to add

Suzy W.
Thank you for your post. I hope you see my response.
Your family line with John Edward ( Or Jacob Emanuel Oppenheimer) born in 1808  and my descendant Herman Oppenheimer born 1842 in Zwolle are half brothers.
Both were the sons of Emanuel Joseph Oppenheimer with John Edward the product of a first marriage to Hendrina Moses Levi and Herman the product of a second marriage to Saartje de Marcus.
I believe John Edward had 3 Siblings and Herman had close to 10.
My research (you probably already know all of this and more) indicates our family lived in Heidelberg Germany in the early 1700s.
Then lived, possibly very briefly in Wolstein, Poland before moving to Zwolle and living there with their family for many years.
John Edward moved his family to New Zealand where there are still descendants.

My part of the family through Herman moved to London in the 1870s.
His Son Henry Oppenheimer born in 1877 in Islington came to America around 1900. Henry before landing in America decided to change his name to Harry Chandler. He seems to have been a deceptive soul, giving his birthplace on some documents as NSW Australia and never the last name Oppenheimer but instead Chandler.
I was only able to find my proper lineage through the help of good people here.
All the best,
Keith C
