Also noted as widow in the 1930 census. Wonder if he did die or if she noted herself as a widow with not knowing where he was  :-\ Whether he died or took off it happened between 1920 and 1930.

I've had a quick look at the very useful fultonhistory.com newspaper archive website for NY state and found a potential bit of background info:

Search terms 'harry chandler' and 'henry chandler' and 'chauffeur' show that someone of that name and job description was 'arraigned and paroled' on a charge of homicide in Nassau environs (same location as that for the family as per 1920 census) in January 1906.  It looks as if he worked for Charles Steele, a partner at JP Morgan.  I wonder if such charges mean that case papers might still be in existence, perhaps providing some more info about him?  An avenue to explore perhaps.

By June 1908 a chauffeur of this name is working for the lawyer Xenophon Huddy and is arrested for speeding!

By the way, the 'Harry A Chandler' who died in Nassau Co in 1927 and is buried at St Bridget's Cemetery, Westbury is a different 'Harry Chandler' to the one being sought here.

Thankyou all so much for your efforts and replies  ;)
Most of the information I had found but Gali you hit the jackpot there as information from the Grandson confirms that he was working for Charles Steele  :D
I will look into this lead further.
Thanks again and if anyone can find his parents etc I would be most grateful.
Regards

From Ellis Island site:

Arrival Aug 1907 on board 'The New York', Harry Chandler, aged 28, chauffeur, born Sydney NSW, last permanent residence London, nearest relative or friend 'parents, Chandler, 34 Christchurch Av, Brondesbury'

Arrival Sept 1908 on board 'The Majestic', Harry Chandler, aged 29, chauffeur, passage paid by 'Mr Steele', born London, nearest relative or friend address 'Chandler, 64 Christchurch Av, Brondesbury'

By the way, it looks as if one of Martha Romy's trips, on board the Adriatic, 1908, was also paid for by a Mr Steele.  Her father's address given as '26 Cassarde, Neuchatel'

34 Christchurch Av Brondesbury was inhabited by the Oppenheimer family on the 1901 census, looks as if they lived there for at least 20 years.  Couldn't see a listing for '64' Christchurch Ave.

Thank you SO much Gali.
I have passed this new information on to the person I am helping- he is in the US. You have helped so much as I have never researched in America before and had no idea where to start.
I think this fellow's parents are going to be difficult to find..Oh for more uncommon names  :P
Thank you again and Happy New Year  :-*

I think it's worth keeping an open mind as to his place of birth, in the sources below he seems to have given 'Australia' 50% of the time and 'England' 50% of the time!

Looks as if there are four records for him in the Ellis Island records:
Oct 1905, The Minnehaha, chauffeur, aged 28, place of birth not recorded
Sep 1906, The Philadelphia, motor engineer, aged 28, place of birth London
Aug 1907, The New York, chauffeur, aged 28, place of birth Sydney NSW
Sep 1908, The Majestic, chauffeur, aged 29, place of birth London

and

the US Federal and NY State census records:
1905 NY census, 783 9th Ave, Manhattan, lodger, chauffeur, aged 30, born England, been in US 2 years
1910 US census, ?could not locate
1915 NY census, North Hempstead, Nassau, aged 38, born Aust.
1920 US census, Nassau, aged 41, born Australia
1925 NY census, ?could not locate

Are there other sources which give his place of birth - did you find a marriage cert?  children's birth certs?

Hi everyone who wrote on this post.
I want to thank you, especially Alison who reached out to you to help me (Harry Chandler's Grandson) to find out what happened to my Grandfather. He just disappeared around 1920, when my dad was 9 years old.
I just registered for this site.
I hope I am doing this correctly.
Many of you asked if there was a marriage certificate.
I Just found it!
All of Harrys other information is listed in earlier posts.
The marriage certificate says that Harry chandler married martha Romy on December 28, 1909
Harry's father is listed as HERMAN and his mother is listed as JESSIE.
His place of birth is listed as Clearmont, Austrailia (I think it should be clermont?)
I've been trying to find a birth certificate for Harry, but I have been unsuccessful.

I find it weird that he would list his place of birth on his travels as Sydney, but his marriage certificate lists otherwise.
So, any ideas where I might get more information on my grandfather and his parents?
I don't have a maiden name for his mother.
I've looked for birth certificate from Queensland and NSW but there are none listed.
Thank you for all your help.
