Short and Hayes
« on: Friday 28 December 12 19:20 GMT (UK) »
Hi folks is there anybody out there who could trace where these ancestors of mine ended up? In the 1920 London Electors list for Wandsworth Battersea London living at 37 Culvert Rd was Patrick Hayes b1892 his sister Lena Short b1886 and her husband Victor Short b1885. Patrick and Lena were born in Murroe Co Limerick Ireland and Patrick was still there for the 1911 census although Lena and Victor appear in Epsom Surrey in 1911 English census. Patrick apparently married in England and died fairly young and had no children but i know no more of him. He did not return to Ireland and his wife may have been called Martha or Matilda. The Shorts had a few children which we know of but they appear to have left London after 1922 or at least i cannot find them in the electors lists. Lena too did not return to Ireland. I ve tried as far as i can to find these ancestors and i m just hoping there s someone better than me out there who might throw some light on it?
Lena and Patrick are my mothers Aunt and Uncle.
Yours in anticipation!
James

FreeBMD has a death of a 74 year old Lena M Short listed in the December quarter of 1960 (ie born c 1886) in the Surrey Mid Eastern regsitration district - the area included Epsom, so if this was her she doesn't appear to have moved far.

Hi and thanks for that, i had spotted that death record and its probable it is her although i know for sure she was Lena Agnes Short but may have had another middle name. The problem i have then is where did she dissapear to for 40 years!
Thanks again, regards

DId Patrick have a middle name?

There is a 1959 death on the Probate Index at 77 Albion Drive for Patrick Joseph Hayes, which ties in with a death index with a birthdate of 1893 (so aged 66).  Probate was granted to widow Mary Hayes.  This is all a bit grasping at straws I'm afraid!

Thanks again for that but according to older relatives still living Patrick died fairly young and it was Lena who sent word home of his death. I m pretty sure it must have been a good bit earlier than 1959 but i do get the feeling he was Patrick J Hayes too from research i have done. I have tried the electoral registers on Ancestry.co.uk for London and Midlands and find no trace of He or the Shorts there? Is there other registers not online yet that i m missing?

According to ancestry, the earliest death for a Patrick Hayes bn 1893 +/- 2yrs was in 1930 in Southampton.  The next one is 1950 in Rochford, Essex - so making his age at death c. 57

Looks like Victor Short died 31 July 1953, with the probate index giving his address as 23 HIlldale Road, Cheam, Surrey so it does look like they didn't move too far!

Because Cheam is/was in Surrey and so didn't fall under the counties of London or Middlesex.  In 1964 Cheam became part of the Greater London area and so for the years 1964 and 1965 (when Ancestry's collection ends) Cheam is included, but not before.
