Muttart Family
« on: Saturday 29 December 12 16:00 GMT (UK) »
My Great Great Grandfather was in Canada with the Army in the 1840s - he married into the Muttart Family but conveniently forgot he was already married in England and had children.

Where can I find a record of his Canadian marriage and the birth of his daughter?

he was called William Henry Griggs and he married Mary Ann Muttart and their daughter was called either Louise or Louisa

The Drouin Collection at ancestry.ca has a baptismal record for Louisa Ann Greggs, d/o William greggs, Corporal in the Grenadier guards and Mary, his wife (no maiden name given).  Louisa b. 17 June 1842 and baptized 23 Oct 1842 at Anglican Garrison, Quebec.

An online family at ancestry shows a marriage for Louisa to William Morse 23 Apr 1863 Middlesex, Engl and death 03 Jun 1943 Queensland, Australia.  The same tree shows a sister, Mary Adeline, born 2 Oct 1844 Chelsea and death Jul 1849, brother William Henry 1848-1915 and another sister, Emily b. 1851.   This tree shows William Henry Griggs b. 1810 and d. 1849.

Their tree shows Griggs with Greggs in brackets for the surname spelling.

Hi GCE and Cosmac

I appreciate this is an old thread

I have been researching Wm Henry Griggs/Greggs b1846 so I am very interested in your comments regarding an earlier marriage in England. The GRO shows Muttart to be the MMN for Mary, Wm henry, and Emily. My uncle is descended from Wm Henry who married Martha Wake

Can you say who was the earlier spouse and do you have any earlier detail on the Griggs line, please?

Thanks, Tony

He first Married Emma Wratten.
He went to Canada with the army and married Mary Muttart.

Interestingly Mary, after William died, went on to have 2 or 3 children and if you look at their births she gives William as their father. Given that he had been deceased for a few years it was obviously a lie.

William, their son, who married Martha Wake was my grandmother Emily Adeline's father.

Have you seen the actual birth certificates?  If there is no father named and only the mother is named as GRIGGS formerly MUTTART then they will be indexed as GRIGGS with mother's maiden surname as MUTTART.

Wasn't it only Emily who was born after William had died?
