WALTER HAROLD LEE from Bideford, Devon
« on: Sunday 30 December 12 23:28 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Hoping someone may be able find out what happened to WALTER HAROLD LEE  born 1897 at Bideford, North Devon, UK. I have from ancestry.com a passenger list and his declaration in 1920, with him travelling to be with his married sister Frances TURNER, who lived at 59 Desnoyer st, Montreal.

I know Frances married a Frederick William TURNER in Bideford, before moving to Canada. I also have a passenger list for her on her own from 1927, where she gives her address as 318 Gordon Ave, Verdun, Montreal.

I would welcome any help or advice that anyone could give, I have no experience of researching in Canada, until now!

Many thanks
Stuart (UK)

Hello Stuart!

There is a tree on An****ry that has the names you mentioned.

Frederick William Turner
b. 29 Sep 1881 in Bideford, England
d. 23 Sep 1943 in Verdun, Quebec

m 1901 in Bideford, England

Frances Gertrude Lee
b. 24 Mar 1882 in Bideford, England
d. 23 Dec 1954 in Verdun, Quebec

They have 6 children listed on the tree - born between 1906 and 1920.

From the 1935 Canadian Voter's List:

Name:   Frederick Turner
Location:   Montréal, Québec
Occupation:   Shoemaker
Electoral District:   Verdun
Year:   1935
Listed at 5th Avenue # 356
Along with Frederick is wife (no name listed) and Miss Rosa (a stenographer)

I don't see any records for either Frederick or Frances in the Drouin Collection (B, M, D's for Quebec) - at first glance.  I can do some more digging.  Might be worth doing some Googling for cemeteries in Verdun to see if they have gravestones with more information.

Take care - Happy New Year!

Hi Stuart,

I've had a quick peek, but don't see him on the 1935 list - but that doesn't mean he wasn't around.

I see a marriage in 1941 in Verdun for a Harold Lee to a Nettie.  He's listed as the son of Ida Peters and Michael Gerald Lee.  He's listed as being a truck driver before entering H. M's service (Army).

Is it possible that's your Walter Harold Lee?

Hi Ais,

Walter Harold Lee's parents were a John LEE and Emily J LITTLEJOHNS, both born in Devon, UK, so I dont think that is my man!

Maybe he moved around after moving to Canada?, I have only found him and his sister Frances so far, who have emigrated, but John and Emily had 10 children that I know of, so there may be more that made the journey!

He did seem to drop the name Walter and prefered to use Harold, before he left and also he was recorded as a boot maker in the 1911 UK census, if that would help your search!

Again... many thanks for your help

Stuart
