passport applications
« on: Wednesday 02 January 13 16:56 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know if people who immigrated to the US or Canada from Ireland via Liverpool would have to apply for a passport in Ireland or England. This would be around 1849-1850. I have found someone on a passenger list who may be my ancestor but it only says from Ireland and does not name a county so I would like to find out more info. I also found some passport application records at Find my Past but they only started at 1849. Does anyone know if there are more recent records on line. Thanks, Roberta

Passports as we know them today only came into use around 1914. So someone emigrating in the 1840s and 1850s would not normally have possessed a passport.

There’s a bit about more recent UK passport records on this site, but with a few exceptions most records have been destroyed.
