emma elizabeth middleton...where did she end up!
« on: Saturday 05 January 13 15:42 GMT (UK) »
I'm stuck trying to find my step great grandmother Emma. She was originally Emma Woodhouse, born Kelling Norfolk about 1859. Married someone surname Morris, had x2 children. Then as many had moved from Norfolk to Durham.
In 1895 she marries my great grandfather Thomas Middleton. She is aged 39. They are in the 1901 Census living together in Sheldon Street, Jarrow.
In 1911 Thomas is living with his daughter Mary (now married & called Woodhouse) and Emma is back in Norfolk caring for her elderly parents William & Elizabeth Woodhouse.

She then disappears...at least I can't find her...tried every main BMD site, tried calling her Woodhouse/Morris or Middleton. Tried Norfolk or Durham.
I'd just like to finish this chapter of my Gt Grandfathers life by rounding his 2nd wife off..so to speak ;)
Any advice appreciated. :D

When Great grandad Thomas dies - is she the informant? Or is he a widower by then? If she is still around, did he leave a will?

No mention of Thomas being a widower/single/married on his death cert.

Kelling is in the Erpingham registration district where Elizabeth (1924) and William (1917) both died.

There is an Emma E Woodhouse marrying a Henry G Payne in Jun 1927 in the Erpingham district. She died in 1963 at 4 Council Houses, Trimingham as Emma Elizabeth Payne leaving her estate to Henry Gordon Payne, a retired brick maker. Are you sure she stayed married to your grandfather?

Back to the drawing board: according to her age at death she was born in 1879.

THANKS FOR ALL YOUR EFFORTS SO FAR :) I think the erpingham deaths are her parents. I don't know if she ever went back to Durham...that's the mystery. Her x2 children  by 1st husband Morris lived in Durham. There were no children from the marriage to my gt grandfather. No divorce as far as I know, but it would have been very difficult then.

Hi,

You don't mention the name of Emma's first husband so I'm not sure if you have the probable marriage,

Emma Elizabeth WOODHOUSE    Sep Q 1877     South Shields    10a  726
other names with same reference
Henry Charles MARTIN
William MORRIS
Mary Ann NEWBIGGIN

William and Emma are living in Hedworth Monkton and Jarrow, South Shields Registration district, in 1881 and 1891.

Regards,
Daisy
