Burridge Family - Dorset.
« on: Monday 07 January 13 20:08 GMT (UK) »
My first post as a senior newbie (80) with minimal computer skills.
Thomas Burridge, according to his military records, was born 1834/1835, "near Poole, in the parish of Poole."
A copy of Thomas's marriage certificate shows his father as Edward Burridge, Seaman - merchant service, and his mother as Elizabeth Glynn.  Marriage certificate is dated 1872 in Glasgow and shows both parents as deceased.
After leaving the army, Thomas qualified as a Chelsea Pensioner.
Vanessa on the Dorset-L mailing list kindly checked Ancestry and Find my Past but could not find a birth listing for Thomas or a marriage listing for Edward and Elizabeth. She did find an Edward Burridge, mariner, had been arrested for smuggling but pardoned as a 17 year old in 1822 and sent to London.  Don't know why he would have been sent to London or even if it is the same Edward.
Thomas would be my G Grandfather and Edward & Elizabeth my GG Grandparents.
I checked OPC but records do not seem to go back this far.
Any help in finding confirming records would be greatly appreciated.

Kindest Regards,

Hi Roy

Welcome to Rootschat  ;D  You're doing very well getting round the world of the internet research  ;D

If I could ask a couple of questions:

Did Thomas die in Scotland - I see him in Glasgow Barony 1881 age 47 (with wife Ann & dau Elizabeth) & in 1891 age 55 (with Elizabeth)  ?

When and where did he attest for the Army?

For Census 1861 and 1871, was he perhaps overseas with the Army at the time (to save us looking for him in the Census if he's not there!)

Cheers

Trying to track  Rhoda BURRIGE, the following possibly is her:

MARRIAGE: 15 Mar 1829, St James Poole

(clearly Emily is not Rhoda's wife! More likely Wife is Emily's relationship to her absent husband) and may or may not have any relation to Martha).

This is Martha in 1841

Hi Ambly,
Thank you so much for this fantastic data.   So much more than I ever anticipated.
I trust this is the proper method to reply.
It will take a little while for me to digest all this and enter it into my Family Tree.

Thank you Ambly for this kind response.

Thomas Burridge was attested in Glasgow in the early 1850s.  Why he ended up in Glasgow I do not know.   His daughter, Elizabeth, my grandmother, married my grandfather John French, who fought in the Boer War with the Irish Fusiliers.  John French was born in Co. Down in 1869.  I do not have a copy of their marriage data and always wondered how they met.
Elizabeth and Thomas moved to Belfast, N. Ireland (date unknown) as I found them in the 1901 census for Belfast.  Elizabeth is listed as head of household as John was away in the Boer War.

Thomas must have died after 1901 as he does not show in the 1911 census.
I am sure he was attested in 1854 and his occupation was listed as shoemaker. He spent 16 years in India and may have been back in time for a 1871 census.  He married Elizabeth 3 Apr 1872 in Glasgow.
My apologies for rambling. I will try to be more precise in the future.
Kindest regards,

Thank you Rosie.   I am sure this is probably the same Edward Burridge.
Combining this with the information from Ambly, I hope to be able to put things in perspective and eventually come up with supporting documentation sources, as I understand this is a "must" for genealogy.
It is a little difficult for me to to put all this data in context but it is a wonderful experience finding ancestors.  Plus the info available on the Dorset websites gives a great insight into the lifestyles in those years.   I am not just a name & date person but also interested in where and how my ancestors lived.    Just wish I had started this endeavour many years ago.

I wonder if this is Thomas & his mother in 1851 - despit the POB being Ireland...

1851: 20 College Street, Glasgow St Paul, Lanarkshire
Head: Elisa BURRIDGE 37, Shoe bender, b England
Son: Thos BURRIDGE 16, Shoe maker, b Ireland
Visitor: Jas. HUNTER 24, Hat Trimmer, b Ireland
Servant: Marrin PAUSTEN 18, Servant, b Glasgow

The orginal Census would show a marital status for Elisa.

Hi Rosie,

I don't think there is any doubt this is my Thomas Burridge family.  His attestation papers in 1954 indicated he was a shoemaker.

Thanks again for your kindness.
